Security lights – do we need them?
There has been an ongoing debate on whether lighting really does keep crime at bay. Most people believe it does, but over the years, some have suggested that it does not make much of a difference.
Well, a new US study has shown an expected and dramatically significant correlation between lighting and crime, especially at night.
The New York City research – which was done in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice, the New York City Police Department and the New York City Housing Authority - has concluded that increased levels of lighting led to a 7 percent overall reduction in so-called index crimes – a subset of offences that includes murder and robbery, as well as certain property crimes.
The study also found that night-time lighting, specifically, cut crime by as much as 39 percent.
With this new evidence that extra lighting can indeed be an effective crime deterrent, it is probably a good idea to invest in reliable security lights or floodlights for our homes, offices and warehouses.
At Australian Lighting, there is a wide range of floodlights that you can choose from, according to your needs.
The Aspect LED Floodlight Commercial Grade has a 100W and 150W floodlight range and comes with a die-cast aluminium housing, making it a good choice for offices and warehouses. It also has an angled bracket for easy installation.
The 30W PHL Twin Spotlight with Sensor – Silver 5000k comes with passive Infra-red technology, which means it would not be easily turned on by wind. It is daylight and night adjustable, and has a 180-degree detection angle.
The FLEXISCAN PIR Security Sensor is fully equipped with time-setting and lux-setting, and is LED compatible. It continuously scans the preset operating zone, and has a 3-wire setup for greater reliability. It also uses passive Infra-red technology, and can be installed on the wall or ceiling.
If you prefer something less visible , this Invisible Microwave Sensor can be hidden in the ceiling cavity. It has a 360-degree detection, is LED compatible, and uses multi-segmented lens for better detection.
For those looking for floodlights that would also double up as beautiful décor, look no further than the Tilbury Wall Light with Sensor, which has the classic lantern design. It has a durable powder coat that makes it suitable for all weather conditions, and the bevelled glass panels give it a stylish look.
